Why You Get Irrational When You Drink (And What It’s Actually About)
Alcohol can change your behavior, emotions, and decision-making — especially after a few drinks.
If you’ve ever wondered why you overdrink or can’t stop once you start, this explains what’s really happening.
Ever feel like you become a different person after a few drinks?
Maybe you’re more emotional, more reactive, more combative… or you wake up thinking, that’s not who I want to be.
Here’s the truth most people miss:
Alcohol isn’t creating the problem — it’s exposing what hasn’t been processed.
When you drink, your inhibition lowers (hello, prefrontal cortex going offline), which means your ability to pause, choose, and regulate starts to fade. That’s why your “off switch” feels like it disappears after a certain number of drinks.
But what comes out in those moments?
It’s not random.
It’s unprocessed emotion.
All the things you’ve been holding in — stress, resentment, overwhelm, fear of judgment — don’t disappear. They wait. And when your guard is down, they come out sideways:
arguments that don’t make sense the next day
snapping at people you love
overreactions that feel big in the moment but confusing later
What we don’t express doesn’t disappear — it waits.
And for so many women (especially moms), we’ve been conditioned to keep it together.
To make sure everyone else is okay.
To perform like everything is “fine.”
So where does all of that go?
We soothe it.
And for a lot of us, that’s where alcohol comes in.
Drinking becomes a form of self-soothing — but it’s not real regulation. It’s temporary relief that actually leaves your nervous system more dysregulated over time.
Which is why this cycle keeps repeating.
So instead of asking, “What’s wrong with me?” I want you to start asking:
What am I holding in?
What am I avoiding?
What am I afraid will happen if I’m fully honest?
Because this is where the powerful shift lies.
You’re not overreacting… you’re under-expressing.
